I was always told when the heater is on in my car, it will help my car from overheating. Is this true?

Sometimes it’s cold in the morning, but warm in the afternoon. Could I light my gas heater and keep it lit all day? Or do I need to turn it off every time that it’s warm enough to not need the heater?
I just want to make sure it’s okay to leave it lit if I need to switch to a/c. The heaters up in the attic, so it’s not easy if I had to keep relighting it.

I don’t understand why people have their hot water heater set to a level where the water will burn you or is uncomfortable. Why not set it to a level where it’s comfortable. Then you won’t have to cut on the cold water when you wash your hands or take a shower. You also will save power or gas in heating the water.

Will this back-up heater be safe and will it make the house smell? What precautions should be taken?
Are the kerosene heaters sold at Home Depot and Lowe’s safe to use in a modern home? Homes built in the mid-70’s.
