I have a 5 gallon tank with one goldfish in it. When the winter months come my room gets EXTREMELY COLD and I think my goldfish would benifit from a heater. I am asking this question now because there is a sale at my local fish store. What brands andf how many watts would you recomend.
The 5 gallon home is only temporary and I will be upgrading soon ( It is a fancy goldfish)

How to build a paraffin heater?

Do It Yourself (DIY) 1 Comment »
ejking42 asked:

I have a paraffin lamp (a hurricane lamp, to be precise) and am interested in using it for heat when I don’t need it for light. I know paraffin heaters exist, and from pictures they largely look like paraffin lamps with cylindrical metal tubes surrounding the flame, with lots of holes in the metal. I assume the flame heats the metal, which then radiates the heat outwards.

My intention is to convert my lantern into a heater by constructing a metal cylinder which can be used to replace the lantern glass. What I really want to know, from anyone who has any experience of this sort of thing, is am I on the right track, and any advice on the details. Eg what metal is best, what’s the best size/density of holes in it, what diameter should the cylinder be, etc…

Any and all help/advice appreciated!

How do you set the temperature settings on an electric water heater?

Maintenance Repairs 5 Comments »
Aldo asked:

Is the temperature window on the upper part of the heater corresponds to the higher temperature setting and the lower window on the lower part corresponds to the lower temperature setting? I have an old heater and all markings are gone except for the temp dial. I am just making sure I am doing this right. Also, what should be the optimum temperature difference to save on electricity? 5 degrees? 10 degrees difference?

Thanks for all the help and any tips you can give to converse energy for this summer.
sorry, conserve energy, not converse. that is funny!
I’m sorry if I was not clear. I have two dials. I can see the temperature numbers but I cannot see or (everything is faded to nothing which one is for the high T setting and which one is the low setting. Please answer this one first.

How you fix a thermometer that controls the heater in my house?

Maintenance Repairs 4 Comments »
Freezing! asked:

My meter of my heater is broken. A normal meter should turn on/off heat as it reaches or fall below my setted temperature. But my thermometer keeps the heat going even if it went way overboard my setting. How do you fix it? Is it something you can buy a new one and install if by yourself? The thing is kinda stuck to the wall…so I think the latter won’t work…
