How does my natural gas heater work?

I just moved to a new apartment and we have a gas heater. It is a square gray thing in the wall with a pipe attached to it. How does this heater work? Does it circulate through the walls and warm all the rooms? It doesn’t seem to because when we close doors the rooms get cold?

Also, how expensive does it get? We have been keeping rooms closed that we don’t use during the day to conserve heat but do we really need to do that?

How does the heater in my apartment work?

I live in a big apartment building that’s probably 25 years old. The building has free water and free heat to all the residents. The heater runs along the floor on one wall in the living room, bedroom, and bathroom. I know that there is water running through the heaters because sometimes I can hear it. Also, the people down the hall turned the knobs on the heater hot water sprayed out. (Our lease agreements say that we’re not suppose to touch the knobs and they were evicted.) Our apartments are toasty warm and very dry. I assumed the apartments were steam heated. But, the lady next door said that it can’t be steam heat because the apartments wouldn’t be so dry. Also, if I change the temp on the thermostat, the temp in my apartment doesn’t seem to change. Can anyone explain how this heating system works?

We are looking to buy a used gas pool heater, but want to use propane. I have read that you can easily buy a part and to convert it, but I don’t know if this is for ALL heaters. Its a 250,000 btu Hayward heater. Any help would be great.

Is there a heater that can be put into a vinyl swimming pool?

I have a vinyl swimming pool that I would like heated for the winter. I have searched and couldn’t really find out if there is a heater that will work safely in a vinyl pool. Does anyone know if this is even possible?
