    This is a simplified answer!

    You need a water heater that is designed to burn the fuel you are going to use. In most larger cities they have Natural Gas available, this requires a different unit than one that burns LP (Liquid Propane).

    The heater burns fuel (LP in this example) The LP is stored in a tank in liquid form a line (pipe) feeds the fuel through a regulator and changes to a gaseous state as it is allowed to expand in the supply line. The fuel is fed to a burner in the water heater, the flames from the burning heats the water and you get to take a nice hot shower.
