How does the heater system work in order to get new oxygen?

Jessica asked:

In winter time, we always close all of the doors and turn on the heater. Does the heater system provide new oxygen for us to breath or we just get oxygen from the chinks in the doors?
Thanks.

A good, modern system will also have its own outside air vent to supply the combustion air, ideally set up so that heat is recirculated from the exhaust flue back to the intake.

But some of those old-style wall heaters will just draw air out of the room which has to be replaced with cold air from outside.

The very worst is a simple fireplace which is very effective at ******* in ice-cold air and sending warmed room air up the chimney. They can actually have a negative net efficiency - they cool better than they heat!
