How strong of a heater should I use for a 5 gallon tank?

Amanda asked:

I’m getting a 5 gallon tank for a betta fish, and I’m looking for a heater. How strong should the heater be? Everything seems like it’s supposed to be used for a much smaller or much larger tank than what I’m getting.

the one that says it is for a 5 Gal tank. They say on there what size they work best in.

The one I have for my 5 gal is a 7.5 Watt.

The light also keeps the water warm. So with that little heater and the light my betta is nice and warm.

I’ve got a Tetra 25 watt heater in my 5 gallon tank. works great.

a 25 watt thermastat heater set to 26c

For heaters they recommend 5 watts per gallon so 25 watt would be ideal. Small tanks are tricky though. Temp fluctuates a lot and lights have a big impact. A betta may not require a heater if your room temp isnt terribly cold.

A 25watt would be fine, but you can use a 50w, it will just run for less time.

The 50 watt may be easier to find, and you can use it on a larger tank if you get one later.
