I am trying to save money, so I turn my water heater, located in my garage to vacation when I am not needing it, especially at night. Why do I have hot water when I run the faucet in the morning ?

Depending on the type of water heater, you will have a tank of water (usually about 40 gallons) heated to about 110 F. The tank is insulated to conserve energy and to prevent the water from cooling too quickly.

It sounds like you may have a pilot light for the ignition and this will keep a small flame burning. Don’t forget that little or no hot water is being used during the night and modern heaters are better insulated to retain heat. By turning the knob to vacation you are only shutting off the burner and not the pilot

Water heaters hold anywhere from 30 to 50 gallons. It takes time for this heat to dissapate. I put a timer on mine that shuts off power from 10p to 6am. I have a newer unit and it holds hot water all night, because no one is using it.

It takes hours and hours for hot water tanks to cool off. If you still have hot water in the morning, good for you, your efforts are paying off.

I’ve seen them stay hot for 2 days or more in the summer….In all actuality..if you are cutting them off only for 1 day, you are wasting more energy when you turn them back on to heat it back up to it’s full temperature…
