Bean asked:
The carpeting by the hot water heater is soaking wet. Can the hot water heater quit working and are still able get hot water? What else could cause soaking wet carpet by the water heater.

your roof may be leaking

could be that your pressure/temperature relief valve let go, it can soak the general area around the tank and still keep the water tank contents hot. Call a plumber
Could have a leak in the actualy tank itself which soaked the floor. The tank will heat water as long as the pilot is on and the burners light. Some cracks in tanks only open wide when the water is being heated as the metal expands, then as the water cools the metal contracts and the ***** narrows.
either way call a plumber

some times they rust out and leak, could be the piping,it could be the pressure valve.it could be something that is near to the heater like a sink or bath tub and the water could be settling near the heater.dry up all water and look for leaks.tko
