My gas water heater is releasing large amounts of water, but only at night when the temperature drops. Ideas?

The water heater is fine during the day, however, when I go down to the garage in the morning, the relief valve has released a large amount of water all over the floor. I know it’s the relief valve because I have placed a container below the pipe for the water to drain into. Any suggestions?
The relief valve has a pipe that is connected to direct the water that comes out from the relief valve. So I know the water heater itself is not leaking. The water is coming directly out of the relief valve at night when it get cold.

better call the plumber to do some checking before the situations becomes worse, that one morning you wake with a big flood in your basement…good luck!!

May be time to replace your water heater. Make a few calls to repair shops and get some quotes.
If the cost to repair our water heater is as high or
higher than the cost to buy a new one, then go
ahead and buy a new one. Meanwhile, try putting
on some putty around the connections to slow down the drip.

the pressure relief vale is shot. you could turn off the power to the heater, lower the water in the tank to a level below the valve, and replace the valve. DIY for less than $20!!!!!!!!!!

If you mean its sweating on the outside of the tank.. You really should get a tank jacket its a insulator.. Ask your plumber for the size needed or take the tank size to LOWES or HOME DEPOT..
Your water will stay hotter longer also !

You might have your water temperature up to high,that would do it ,cause during the day your using the hot water and it isn’t building up pressure.Try turning your temperature down and see what happens.Otherwise it`s your release valve and a good do it yourself project. Good luck!
