I have a vinyl swimming pool that I would like heated for the winter. I have searched and couldn’t really find out if there is a heater that will work safely in a vinyl pool. Does anyone know if this is even possible?

Yes, it’s possible. Here in Canada, almost all vinyl inground pools are heated and some above grounds as well. If you’re thinking of propane or gas fired heaters, they start at 125,000 BTU’s and depending on the size of the pool, could go up to 325,000 BTU
Alternately, you can also purchase a electric heater, again, depending on the size of pool, from 11Kw to 50 Kw. Electric heaters may be very expensive to run, where you live.
To figure out which you want to run, you’ll have to find out what yours energy costs are for each type. It differs for every area and utility company.
All of the heaters I mentioned here are plumbed into the return side of your lines, after the filter.
Edit: I see spammer Dave is alive and well. That’s a pay per click site.
